Tristan Robinson-July pinned his opponent at 165 pounds during Cortland's dual victory over Lycoming
WILLIAMSPORT, PA. – The Cortland wrestling team won one of its three matches during the opening day of the 16-team Budd Whitehill National Duals Friday at Lycoming College. The Red Dragons (1-2) will now compete for a possible ninth-place finish on Saturday after finishing 1-2 in Group D.
Cortland will face The College of New Jersey in the Group 9-12 semifinals Saturday at 9 a.m. and will wrestle again at noon for either ninth or 11th place.
Cortland opened action Friday with a 28-20 loss to nationally 23rd-ranked Williams. The Red Dragons posted four wins in the match - pins by
Culley Bellino (Canastota) at 141 pounds and
Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) at 149 pounds, a 17-2 technical fall by
Ethan Gallo (Minisink/Minisink Valley) at 197 pounds, and a 4-1 win by decision at 133 pounds by
Rocco Futia (Wallkill). Williams registered two wins by pin, two more victories by technical fall, and two victories by decision.
The Red Dragons suffered a close 24-23 defeat to nationally 22nd-ranked Messiah in their next match. Each team won five bouts, with Bellino and Christiano Lievano (East Setauket/Ward Melville) recording pins at 141 pounds and 125 pounds for the Red Dragons. Futia and Gallo posted victories by major decision, and
Colton Havens (Canisteo/Canisteo-Greenwood) had a 10-4 win by decision at 157 pounds. Gallo's win came versus nationally 12th-ranked Tucker Seidel. Of Messiah's five bout wins, two came by pin, and one each by technical fall, major decision, and decision to come away with the slim victory.
Cortland finished the day with a 26-23 victory over host Lycoming. Lievano and Havens each picked up their second pins of the day, while
Tristan Robinson-July (Ossining) posted a pin at 165 pounds. Gallo a 3-0 day with a second technical fall, and Centrone won an 8-3 decision to finish at 2-1 on the day for Cortland.
