Cortland Loses to Oneonta in SUNYAC Tennis Semifinals

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The third-seeded Cortland women's tennis team lost to second-seeded Oneonta, 4-0, in the semifinals of the SUNYAC postseason tournament at Binghamton University's Lane-Starke Tennis Center.

Cortland closes the fall season with a 7-7 record. Oneonta (9-1) will face top-seeded Oswego in the finals Saturday afternoon.

Oneonta won two doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Haley Peck and Annika Cripe won 6-1 at first doubles, and Dakota Jimenez and Ashley Giaviano squeaked past Anneli Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Gracie Guiliano (Rome/Notre Dame), 7-5, at third doubles. Cortland's Reaghan Hughes (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and Alexandra Thut (Poughquag) were leading at second doubles, 6-5, but that match was not finished once Oneonta clinched the doubles point.

In singles play, Oneonta picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win by Cripe on the second flight, a 6-3, 6-4 win by Taylor Plue at number three, and a 6-4, 7-5 win by Jimenez over Adams at number five. The remaining three singles matches were unfinished. Guiliano was on the verge of winning at sixth singles, leading 6-1, 5-4, before the stoppage. Christina Massoni (West Babylon) lost her first set to Peck at first singles, 6-1, but won the second set, 6-3. They were tied 1-1 in the third when play was halted.

Prior to the match, Cortland senior Anderson Eggleston (St. Johnsville/Oppenheim-Ephratah) was recognized as the SUNYAC's Elite 20 Award Winner as the player at the SUNYAC finals site with the highest overall grade point average. The senior physical education major entered the fall semester with a 4.0 cumulative GPA.
