ONEONTA, N.Y. - Nora Trimarchi converted a penalty stroke 1:11 into overtime to give host Oneonta a 2-1 upset win over nationally 10th-ranked Cortland in SUNYAC field hockey action.
Oneonta improved to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Cortland is now 10-2 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC. Cortland had entered with a 4-0 record in overtime contests this fall. Cortland will host Morrisville in a league game Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Cortland took a 1-0 lead just over six minutes into the game on a goal by
Lillian Morse (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake). Off a penalty corner, Morse controlled the ball, drove through the defense from the top of the circle and scored her second goal of the season. Oneonta knotted the game 5:50 into the second quarter when Sarah Stadelmann scored after a battle for a loose ball in the circle.
In overtime, Trimarchi's long pass found Alexandra Howell open behind the defense for a breakaway. Howell was tripped up as she tried to score to earn Oneonta a penalty stroke. Trimarchi was selected to take the penalty stroke and she buried a shot inside the left post to give Oneonta the win.
Oneonta goalie Eva Klessel made six saves, including two each in the third and fourth quarters to keep the game tied through the second half. Cortland finished the game with a 17-8 advantage in shots and a 9-3 lead in penalty corners.
Sofia Cannistraci (Guilderland) made one save for the guests.
