Cortland Wins 86-63 at Canton; Coston Nets Career-High 29 Points

CANTON, N.Y. - Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) scored a career-high 29 points as the Cortland men's basketball team remained in first place in the SUNYAC standings with an 86-63 win at Canton.
 
Cortland (18-4, 14-1 SUNYAC) is a game ahead of Oswego (13-2 conference) in the league standings. Cortland plays at Oswego Saturday at 4 p.m. and wraps up the regular season next week with games at Fredonia and Morrisville. Oswego won at home versus Morrisville in overtime Friday night.
 
Coston hit 11-of-14 shots from the field, including all three of his 3-point attempts, and grabbed six rebounds. Nolan Raymond (Queens Village/Vermont Academy) made 6-of-10 shots overall, including 2-of-4 from the arc, and ended with 15 points and six rebounds.
 
Isaiah Austin (Albany) scored eight points, Xavier Leveille (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) scored seven points and hauled in 10 rebounds, and Chris McDonald (Orchard Park) scored seven points. Joel Davis (Watertown) finished with five assists and six rebounds and Kendall Arcuri (Staten Island/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) had three assists and six rebounds.
 
Lateef Johnson Jr. scored 23 points and added 12 rebounds, three steals and two blocks for Canton (4-18, 3-12 SUNYAC). He hit 9-of-15 shots from the floor, 4-of-8 from 3-point range. Malaki Smith tallied 11 points.
 
Cortland shot 51 percent from the field compared to 39 percent for the Roos.
 
Cortland led 9-0 just two minutes into the game but was only up by one, 16-15, at the 11:21 mark of the half. The Red Dragons went on a 6-0 run to go up 22-15, and later in the half outscored the Roos 14-3 to take a 45-26 lead with 2:26 left. Coston scored eight points during that run.
 
Cortland was up 49-33 at halftime behind 12 points each from Coston and Raymond, and Coston scored seven points during an 11-2 streak six minutes into the second half that put the Red Dragons up by 25 points at 60-35.
