Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson Rondout Valley) has been honored as the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Division III Men's Basketball National Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 15. He also was selected to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week and was the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week.
Coston recorded career-high scoring performances in back-to-back road wins as Cortland clinched the SUNYAC regular-season title for the first time since 2013. He scored 29 points on 11-of-14 shooting, including 3-for-3 from three-point range, and grabbed six rebounds in an 86-63 road win at Canton on Friday. The following day, Coston tallied 32 points and 14 rebounds in a 65-58 victory at second-place Oswego, shooting 13-of-15 from the field overall and 6-for-6 in the second half. For the weekend, he shot a combined 24-of-29 (83 percent) from the floor and averaged 30.5 points and 10 rebounds per game.
In 23 starts this season, Coston leads the Red Dragons with 14.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He's shooting 60 percent from the field (128-of-213) overall and 41 percent (28-of-69) from 3-point range.
Cortland (19-4, 15-1 SUNYAC) has won 11 straight games. The Red Dragons will play at Fredonia tonight at 7:30 p.m., followed by a game at Morrisville on Saturday at 4 p.m. to finish off regular-season play.
