GREENSBORO, N.C. – Christopher Newport struck for a combined 12 runs between the second and fourth innings and the Captains defeated nationally 13th-ranked Cortland, 17-5, at the D3 Showcase at First National Bank Field.
The game was called after seven innings due to the tournament's 10-run rule. Cortland (1-2) was scheduled to face nationally ranked Denison on Sunday, but that game has been canceled due to Denison leaving the tournament early to avoid potential weather issues.
Six players recorded multiple hits for CNU (5-1). Aaron Maxie went 5-for-5 with three doubles, five RBI and two runs scored and Logan Adams was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs. Josh Reinhold was 2-for-3 with a double, three walks, three RBI and two runs, Cameron Slough was 2-for-3 with a double, three walks and two RBI, and Jake Benedict finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, an RBI and four runs scored. In addition, Ashton Hylton drew three walks and Stone Lasseigne had two walks among the 13 walks issued by Cortland's six pitchers.
Trey McGowan (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) finished 5-for-5 with a double and
Nolan Smith (Hamburg) was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI to lead Cortland's 12-hit attack.
Tristan Gatchalian (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) was 2-for-3.
Cooper Newell earned the win on the mound for CNU. He gave up 10 hits and five runs, four earned, in five innings of work with five strikeouts and two walks. Cortland starter
Warren Miller (Plattsburgh) took a no-decision after giving up four runs on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks in an inning and a third.
Tommy Lynch (West Seneca/Canisius) allowed CNU's last two runs in a five-run second and took the loss. CNU added four runs in the third and three in the fourth to go up 13-5.
Cortland led 4-1 after scoring four times in the bottom of the first. Smith singled in two runs in that inning and two others scored on an error. Cortland's other run came via a Smith RBI double in the second.
