GENEVA, NY – The Cortland men's hockey team fell by a 4-0 scored at nationally top-ranked Hobart in the semifinals of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament on Saturday evening.
Hobart improves to 27-0-0 on the year, while Cortland finishes the season with a 14-12-1 record.
Nolan Suggs (White Lake, MI/El Paso Rhinos) made a career-high 59 saves in goal for the Red Dragons.
Thomas Rockey (Mullica Hill, NJ/Rochester Jr. Americans) won 11 faceoffs, and had a team-high three shots on goal.
Kahlil Fontana and Arvega Hovsepyan each registered a goal and two assists for the Statemen, and Damon Beaver stopped 19 shots in goal for the shutout, the 25th of his career to tie the NCAA Division III career record.
Hobart sent a flurry of shots on goal in the opening 10 minutes of the contest, but Suggs turned aside all 16 shots he faced during that stretch.
The Statemen finally broke through for the opening goal by Adam Fasig on their 22nd shot on goal with under four minutes left in the period, taking a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Early in the second period, Hobart went on the power play after a holding penalty by the Red Dragons, but Suggs made two saves on the penalty kill to keep the deficit at one.
Only a minute later, Cortland committed another penalty, and Hobart took advantage with a power-play goal, with Fontana finishing off a one-timer from the left faceoff dot.
Hobart added another goal late in the frame, a wrist shot from the slot by Bauer Morrissey that found the top left corner of the net. The Statesmen held a 3-0 lead into the second intermission, and a 49-15 edge in shots on goal through two periods.
Hovsepyan finished off the scoring with 3:31 remaining in the third period, and Beaver made four saves in the third period to complete the shutout.
