OSWEGO, NY –
Genevieve Sbrocca (Fort Worth, TX/The Hill School Prep) and
Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) both scored a goal to lead the Cortland women's hockey team to a 2-1 road victory at Oswego in the semifinals of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament on Saturday.
Cortland is now 16-7-4 on the year and advances to the championship game of the conference tournament for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The Red Dragons will head to top-seeded Plattsburgh, who won its semifinal by a 7-0 score over William Smith, with the game time set for 3 p.m. on Saturday. Oswego ends the year with a 14-10-2 record.
Sbrocca's goal was her third of the season, while Aneborn netted her 12 goal of the year, and fourth goal in this year's conference tournament.
Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside Junior),
Katie Diem (Fairport/Niagara University), and
Emma McLean (Burlington, MA/SUNY Plattsburgh) each registered an assist for Cortland.
Eline Gillodes (La Saulce, France/Kents Hill) made 24 saves in goal for her 15th win of the year.
Tilly Pethrick scored the lone goal for the Lakers, assisted by Brittany Iversen. Mia DeVivo made 13 saves for Oswego.
Oswego thought it had taken an early lead in the first period when a Lakers forward collided with Gillodes and the puck ended up in the back of the net, but the referee correctly ruled the goal out for goaltender interference.
Shortly after, Cortland took the lead thanks to the freshman Sbrocca. The Lakers attempted to break out from their own defensive zone, but McLean intercepted the pass and slid the puck to Sbrocca in the slot, and Sbrocca ripped a wrist shot into the top right corner of the goal to make it 1-0 with 9:02 left in the period.
Cortland headed into the first intermission with the 1-0 lead, with Gillodes stopping all 10 shots she faced in the frame.
Aneborn doubled Cortland's lead with 8:22 left in the second period, sniping a shot from the left side that hit off the bottom of the crossbar and went straight down, bounced, and tricked over the goal line before DeVivo or the Lakers' defense could react to keep it out.
The Lakers maintained a slim 15-13 edge in shots on goal through two periods, but Cortland held its two-goal edge into the second intermission.
Just before the midway point of the third period, Pethrick got Oswego on the board to make it 2-1 with 10:14 left in regulation.
With 5:26 left, Cortland committed a hooking penalty to send the Lakers on the power play, but Gillodes made two saves and
Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22AA) blocked a shot to help the Red Dragons kill the penalty and keep the lead.
Oswego pulled DeVivo for an extra attacker with 1:10 left, but the Red Dragons were able to keep a solid defensive front and allow just one shot on goal, which Gillodes was able to save with 30 seconds remaining, to secure the win.
