CEDAR RAPIDS, IA –
Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) went 1-1 in the 149-pound weight class on the second day of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships to finish in seventh place on Saturday afternoon at the Alliant Energy Power House in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Centrone finishes with a 3-2 record with one pin and two major decisions for the tournament for his seventh-place finish, and had already secured All-America honors after a 2-1 day on Friday.
The senior began the day with a tight 9-6 loss to Nate Fitt of Coast Guard, but bounced back with a 13-4 major decision over Caleb Seyfried of Williams in the seventh-place match.
In the first match of the day, Centrone scored a takedown only 23 seconds into the opening period, but Fitt earned an escape point just seconds later to reduce Centrone's lead to 3-1 after the first period. Fitt collected another point with an escape in the second period, before a takedown and a near fall flipped the score to 8-4 in favor of Fitt after two periods following a Centrone escape point late in the period. Cetrone recorded a two-point reversal early in the third period, but couldn't record another takedown in the final minute to tie the score.
Centrone had two takedowns in the first two minutes against Seyfried and held a 6-2 lead after one period. He scored an escape point early in the second period and extended the lead to 13-3 with two more takedowns in the second period. Seyfried's escape point early in the third period was the last scoring of the bout, as Centrone scored the 13-4 major decision.
Centrone scored 10.5 team points for the Red Dragons, as Cortland finished 38th out of 68 teams at the national tournament.
