Cortland Finishes Fifth at Virginia Wesleyan Marlins Invitational

Steffi Trombley tied for 30th place
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. – The Cortland women's golf team began the spring portion of its season with a fifth-place finish at the Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins Invitational. The two-day tournament was conducted Monday and Tuesday at the Cypress Point Country Club.
 
Cortland finished with a 356 on Monday and a 349 on Tuesday for a final score of 705. The Red Dragons were sixth after the first day but moved up to finish fifth, two strokes ahead of Mount Union (349-358-707). Southern Virginia won the team title with a 645 (310-335) and Virginia Wesleyan was second with a 662 (324-338). A total of nine teams competed.
 
Gina Milazzo (Greenwood Lake/Warwick Valley) was Cortland's top finisher with a tie for 13th place out of 55 golfers. Her two-day score of 171 featured an 83 Monday and an 88 Tuesday. Pia Aguilar (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Highlands) tied for 24th with a 177, improving from a 91 on the first day to an 86 on the second day.
 
Mimi Rienzo (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) made a 12-stroke improvement between rounds, opening with a 96 before posting an 84 on Tuesday. She finished in 28th place. Steffi Trombley (Plattsburgh) tied for 30th place with a 182 (89-93) and Kara Dumas (Jefferson/Gilboa-Conesville) placed 33rd with a 184 (93-91).
 
Sydney Richards of Southern Virginia was the tournament medalist with a 149, including an even-par 72 on Monday.
 
Cortland returns to action April 11-12 when its hosts the Martin/Wallace Invitational at the Cortland Country Club.
