PITTSFORD, NY – Cortland, ranked 19th nationally, dropped a 10-8 decision on the road at nationally 12th-ranked St. John Fisher in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest on Saturday afternoon. St. John Fisher improves to 7-1 on the year, while Cortland drops to 4-4.
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) finished with four points on two goals and two assists, while
James Violi (East Islip) had a goal and an assist and
Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) added two assists.
Charlie Falowski (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) made 13 saves in goal for Cortland, and added a caused turnover and three ground balls.
Sean Donaldson had four goals and an assist for the Cardinals, while Lane Edinger chipped in a goal and two assists and Hayden Lauer scored twice. Tyler Manning stopped 12 shots in goal to record the victory.
Tucker Macknik (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) gave Cortland the 1-0 lead under two minutes into the game with a goal in transition after a feed from Kavanagh. The Cardinals responded back with two quick goals, including a man-up goal after a penalty on the Red Dragons, to go ahead by a 2-1 score with 10:17 left in the frame.
Caden Morra (Farmingdale/Plainedge) tied the score for Cortland, with Violi providing his first assist of the year, with under four minutes remaining in the quarter, and the teams were all square at 2-2 through one period of play.
Cortland outscored St. John Fisher 3-2 in the second quarter, with two of the Red Dragons' goals coming down a man. After the Cardinals went ahead early in the second quarter, Kavanagh netted a man-down goal off an assist from
Jimmy Addonizio (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius). St. John Fisher went back ahead on Donaldson's first goal of the game with 5:09 left in the half, but Kavanagh found Violi for another man-down goal to tie the game again with 4:10 remaining.
Eli Volk's (Alamo, CA/San Ramon Valley) goal with 1:26 left in the half, assisted by Stoecker, gave Cortland a 5-4 lead into halftime.
The Cardinals outscored Cortland 3-1 in the third quarter, with Donaldson providing two of the St. John Fisher goals in the frame, to take a 7-6 lead into the final quarter. Cortland's lone goal of the period was scored by
Ethan Pope (New Hartford), his first goal as a Red Dragon.
The Red Dragons regained an 8-7 lead with 13:21 remaining in the fourth quarter after back-to-back goals by
Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) and Kavanagh. However, St. John Fisher scored the final three goals of the contest for the final 10-8 scoreline. After an unnecessary roughness penalty by Cortland, Lauer netted the tying goal, before following it up with the go-ahead goal just two minutes later. Donaldson added his fourth goal of the game to give the Cardinals a two-goal advantage with 5:50 remaining.
Cortland had three offensive possessions over the final minutes, but turned the ball over two times, hit the post once, and had one shot saved by Manning to secure the victory for the Cardinals.
