Cortland Sends Three Competitors to King's Monarch Invitational

Travis Firkins finished in second place in the hammer throw in the men's meet
WILKES-BARRE, PA. - Cortland sent three athletes to compete at the King's College Monarch Invitational to open the 2026 outdoor track and field season.

On the men's side, Travis Firkins (Hilton) finished second out of seven competitors in the hammer throw with a toss of 46.76 meters (153' 5"). Tommy Martin (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) was second of nine in the javelin throw with a distance of 48.05 meters (157' 7").

Jennifer Ndukwu (Queens/Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School) competed in three events for the Red Dragon women. She was second of eight in the shot put at 11.45 meters (37' 6.75"), third of seven in the hammer throw at 44.98 meters (147' 7"), and fifth of 10 in the discus at 31.38 meters (102' 11").

Coach's Corner - Comments from Cortland Head Coach Steve Patrick:

It was a very small contingent that made the trip down I-81 to compete at King's College. We're very fortunate to have the support from our administration to give these folks who hadn't competed the 'normal' amount indoors an opportunity to start their outdoor season a bit early.

Overall it was a pretty reasonable effort to start out the season. For Travis and Tommy it was the first competition of the year, for Jen the hammer and the discus were the first time out since last spring, and she had been so focused on the weight throw for the end of indoor that shot felt a bit like a new event. Having this as a chance to scrape a little rust off before 'really' opening the season next weekend is a solid way to start.

We're looking forward to having the bulk of the team back from break and heading to Widener and Rochester for meets next weekend before hosting our annual clinic on Sunday, March 29th.
