PITTSFORD, NY – The Cortland women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-4 decision at nationally-23rd ranked St. John Fisher in a non-league contest on Tuesday evening. St. John Fisher improves to 3-3 on the season, while Cortland sees its three-game winning streak come to an end and falls to 4-3 on the year.
Sydney Elizalde (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) led the Red Dragons with two goals, while
Kristen Javenes (North Rockland) provided a goal and an assist.
Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) also scored a goal, and
Brooke Elizalde (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) and
Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) tallied an assist apiece.
Melillo's assist was also the 100th point of her career, as the junior has now recorded 67 goals and 33 assists in 44 career games.
Bridie McGuire (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) finished with five draw controls, four caused turnovers, and five ground balls to lead the Cortland defense.
Sydney Elizalde and Melillo each caused two turnovers and
Taylor Mullins (Penn Yan/Penn Yan Academy) finished with four draw controls.
Dharma Makarowsky led the Cardinals with four goals, and Chelsea Lopata added three goals and an assist. Maggie Cross recorded the win in goal for St. John Fisher, making five saves and allowing four goals.
Makarowsky opened the game with the first two St. John Fisher goals in the opening six minutes of the contest to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. The game stayed 2-0 through the end of the first quarter, with St. John Fisher committing five turnovers and the Red Dragons committing four turnovers in the period.
The Cardinals added three more goals in the opening six minutes of the second quarter to take a 5-0 lead. Cortland broke up the run with a goal by Javenes, assisted by
Brooke Elizalde, with 8:04 remaining, but St. John Fisher scored twice more to extend the lead to 7-1. The Red Dragons ended the half with two goals by
Sydney Elizalde in the final 2:02, with the first coming on a free-position shot and the second goal coming as time was expiring in the half after a feed from Melillo.
St. John Fisher outscored Cortland 3-1 in the third quarter, with Cortland's lone goal in the frame coming on Dempsey's 13th goal of the season, assisted by Javenes.
Makarowsky scored the only goal of the fourth quarter for either side with 6:22 remaining, giving St. John Fisher the final 11-4 margin of victory.
Cortland finished with a 13-4 edge in draw controls for the game, but the Red Dragons had 25 turnovers in the contest, compared to 17 for the Cardinals.
