CORTLAND, NY – Caleb Lawson scored a man-up goal with 1:50 remaining in the fourth quarter to lift visiting Skidmore to a 10-9 victory over nationally 14th-ranked Cortland in a non-conference men's lacrosse matchup on Saturday afternoon on Grady Field. Skidmore improves to 4-0 with the win, while Cortland drops to 2-2 on the year.
Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) and
Mason Carroll (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) each finished with two goals and an assist, while
Frank Neeson (Orchard Park) added two goals for the Red Dragons.
Charlie Falowski (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) made 10 saves in goal for Cortland.
Nicky Miltenberger (Ridge/Longwood) won 10-of-12 faceoffs and
Chad Bowen (Yorktown) won 7-of-10 faceoffs.
James Sullivan (Rockville Centre/South Side) caused two turnovers to lead the Cortland defense.
Conor Geier and Jake Weiner each had two goals and an assist for the Thoroughbreds. Lawson scored a pair of goals, and Michael Aiello provided a goal and two assists. Ethan Dicturel scooped up six ground balls and caused two turnovers. Goalkeeper Marc Gadbois made 10 saves for Skidmore.
Cortland opened the game on a 4-0 run, with
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover), Neeson, Swedlund, and
James Violi (East Islip) all scoring to give the Red Dragons the early lead with 8:00 left in the quarter.
Skidmore scored the next two goals in the final 1:30 of the frame, with Lawson beating the buzzer with under a second left into an open goal after Falowski had left the cage to try and intercept a pass attempt.
Cortland reestablished its four-goal advantage in the first two minutes of the second quarter on goals by Neeson and Carroll, but the Thoroughbreds closed to within a goal with three straight goals to end the half.
Drew Williamee (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) scored less than a minute into the third quarter off an assist from Swedlund to give Cortland a 7-5 advantage, but Skidmore scored three times in a row to take its first lead of the game with 1:05 left in the third quarter after Weiner's second goal of the game.
Geier gave Skidmore a two-goal lead early in the fourth quarter, but Cortland responded with goals by Carroll and Swedlund to tie the game, with Swedlund's team-leading 14th goal of the season coming off a feed from Carroll with 3:00 left.
Cortland won the ensuing faceoff but turned the ball over, while stepping offsides on the following defensive possession for a 30-second technical penalty. Lawson capitalized to give the visitors the 10-9 lead.
Cortland once again won the faceoff, but Gadbois made his 10th and final save with under 40 seconds left, and Skidmore cleared and killed the remainder of the clock to secure the upset victory.
