COLUMBUS, GA. – The Cortland softball team lost two games Saturday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Red Dragons had a comeback fall just short in a 6-4 setback to LaGrange before losing in five innings to Transylvania, 21-5.
The Red Dragons (1-3) wrap up tournament play Sunday against The College of St. Benedict and nationally ranked Huntingdon.
LaGrange 6, Cortland 4
Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on
Shelby LaMont's (Amsterdam) RBI single, but LaGrange (2-11) answered with five runs in the bottom of the first despite recording just one hit - an Addi Grace Dennis two-run double that capped the inning's scoring.
The Red Dragons settled down and scored on a
Kayla Pendergast (West Hempstead) RBI groundout in the second and an
Emma Robins (Levittown/Division Avenue) RBI groundout in the fourth to make it 5-3. The Panthers scored in the sixth on Kamie Gibby's RBI triple, and in the seventh Cortland got the run back on
Laila Smith's (Guilderland) RBI single but couldn't score again.
LaMont finished 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, Pendergast was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Smith finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Red Dragons.
Sophia Wahl (Schuylerville) suffered the loss in the circle.
Olivia DiSalvo (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) tossed four and two thirds innings of relief and gave up one run on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Jenna Yeary went the distance for LaGrange, allowing 10 hits and four runs. Hannah Barnett was 2-fof-2 and Grace Dennis finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Transylvania 21, Cortland 5 (5 inn.)
Transylvania jumped out quickly to take control, scoring seven runs in the first and 11 in the second to go up 18-0. Cortland scored twice in the third, but the Pioneers plated two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Cortland scored its final three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Sabrina Chapman (Franklin Square/H. Frank Carey) came off the bench for Cortland and went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI.
Sam Pusloskie (Clarence) finished 2-for-3.
Kayla Santo (Franklin Square/Valley Stream North) was 1-for-2 with a triple and
Morgan Ellerbrock (Colonie) went 1-for-3 with an RBI single for her first collegiate hit.
Transylvania finished with 20 hits. Raegan Gibson was 4-for-4 with two homers, a double, five RBI and three runs, Emilie Young finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and four runs, and Avery Parsons went 3-for-4 with a homer, walk, five RBI and four runs. Trinity Bridges started but did not qualify for the win as she tossed just two and a third innings. Olivia Colebank went the final two and two thirds innings for the victory.
