Cortland Shuts Out Oneonta, 8-0 in Six Innings, to Salvage Split of League Twinbill

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland softball team split a SUNYAC doubleheader versus visiting Oneonta. The Red Dragons lost the first game, 4-3, after the guests rallied to take the lead in the top of the sixth, but bounced back to win the second game, 8-0 in six innings, behind a combined shutout from Olivia DiSalvo (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and Sophia Wahl (Schuylerville).

Cortland (14-7, 5-1 SUNYAC) will host league leader New Paltz (6-0 in conference) in a doubleheader Saturday at noon.

Oneonta 4, Cortland 3

Oneonta scored in the top of the first on a Kayla Kean two-out RBI double, but Cortland answered with two in the bottom of the first on a Laila Smith (Guilderland) one-out single and a Shelby LaMont (Amsterdam) two-run homer.

The game remained 2-1 until the top of the sixth. Anna Spicciatie led off for Oneonta with a double, went to third on Kayla Kean's infield single, and scored the tying run when Kean stole second and a throwing error allowed Spicciatie to come home. Two batters later, Ella Kean hit a two-run homer to right to give the guests a 4-2 lead.

Cortland's two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh came up just short. LaMont singled and Shannon Scotto's (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) walk moved pinch runner Anj Ferrara (Niskayuna) to second. Morgan Ellerbrock (Colonie) singled to drive home Ferrara and move Scotto to third as the potential tying run, but a groundout to first ended the game.

Anna Torgersen earned the win for Oneonta, giving up two runs on seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts in five innings. Caitlin McTiernan entered in the bottom of the sixth after Oneonta took the lead and earned the save, allowing one run on two hits with a walk over the final two innings. Gianna Endieveri (Glens Falls) went the distance for Cortland, giving up four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.

LaMont finished 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI, Ellerbrock was 2-for-4 with a triple and RBI, and Smith finished 2-for-4. Maggie Cummings (Holland Patent) was 1-for-2 with a hit by pitch and Scotto was 1-for-3 with a walk.

For Oneonta, Kayla Kean went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI and Ella Kean drove in two runs with her home run in the sixth.

Cortland 8, Oneonta 0 (6 inn.)

DiSalvo improved to 6-1 with the victory in Game 2, allowing four hits and no walks with two strikeouts in five innings. Wahl entered with a 4-0 lead in the top of the sixth and retired Oneonta in order, and Cortland closed the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the eight-run rule.

Cortland went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Smith singled with one out, advanced to both second and third on passed balls, and scored two batters later on a Scotto fielder's choice grounder.

DiSalvo retired the first nine batters she faced before allowing an infield single to start the fourth, then got the next four batters out before giving up a single to Ella Kean with one out in the fifth. Kean took second on an error after the hit, but was thrown out trying to advance to third on a grounder to DiSalvo. Singles by Emma Moore and pinch hitter Eva Blaney loaded the bases with two outs, but the next batter hit a grounder to Kaeli McAnally (Islip) at short and she raced to touch third for an inning-ending force out.

Cortland scored three times in the fifth on a Scotto RBI double, an Ellerbrock RBI single and a McAnally run-scoring fielder's choice. In the sixth, Kayla Pendergast (West Hempstead) drew her third walk of the game to lead off the inning. Katie Stork (Massapequa) singled with one out, moving Pendergast to third, and Smith singled through the left side to drive in a run. LaMont followed with an RBI single through the right side, Scotto drove in a run with a groundout to short, and Ellerbrock ended the game with an RBI single to right center to bring home pinch runner Lillian Morse (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake).

LaMont finished 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI, Ellerbrock was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Scotto drove in three runs, Stork went 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch, and Cummings was 1-for-2 with a hit by pitch.

McTiernan, after earning the save in the opener, started Game 2 and allowed an unearned run on two hits and two walks in an inning and a third to take the loss.
