ONEONTA, NY – The Cortland men's lacrosse team took the lead just six seconds into the first quarter, and led for the remainder of the game in a 20-7 victory at Oneonta in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday afternoon. Cortland improves to 8-5 (4-0 SUNYAC) with its fourth straight win, while Oneonta drops to 6-7 (3-1 SUNYAC).
Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) scored five goals for Cortland, his third game this season scoring at least five goals.
Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) added three goals and two assists, while
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) chipped in two goals and three assists.
Charlie Falowski (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) registered 15 saves and allowed only six goals in 53:25 of action to record the victory.
James Sullivan (Rockville Centre/South Side) finished with three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Nicky Miltenberger (Ridge/Longwood) won 13-of-17 faceoffs, scooped up five ground balls, and also added an assist for Cortland.
Oneonta was led offensively by Aidan Boyle, who scored three goals. Johnny Terrana recorded three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Mark Restivo made 13 saves in goal.
Miltenberger won the opening faceoff and picked up the ground ball for Cortland. He then continued towards the Oneonta goal, before dishing to Swedlund to give Cortland a 1-0 lead with 14:54 left in the first quarter.
Cortland extended its lead to 5-0 only 3:26 into the game after two goals each by Kavanagh and Stoecker. Oneonta scored twice in the final 7:27 of the quarter, while Cortland added a goal by
James Violi (East Islip) to lead 6-2 after one period.
A goal by Boyle for Oneonta early in the second quarter pulled the hosts back within three goals, but Cortland responded with three straight goals, one goal by
Eli Volk (Alamo, CA/San Ramon Valley) and two more goals from Swedlund, to build its lead up to 9-3 with 9:16 left in the half.
With under four minutes left in the half, Oneonta scored twice in the span of 17 seconds to get back to within four goals, but Cortland once again answered, with Swedlund and
Caden Morra (Farmingdale/Plainedge) netting goals 39 seconds apart to give Cortland an 11-5 lead at the half.
Cortland came out of halftime with the first five goals of the third quarter, one each by Stoecker, Swedlund,
Patrick O'Doherty (Lynbrook),
Ethan Pope (New Hartford), and Volk, leading 16-5 with 5:12 left in the third quarter. Oneonta scored the final goal of the period through Thomas Hnis with 3:19 in the frame.
O'Doherty and Morra both tallied their second goals of the contest early in the fourth quarter, and
Sean Olvany (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) gave Cortland its largest lead of the contest at 19-6 with 6:35 remaining. After a goal by Oneonta's Jamie O'Neil, the reigning SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Year who was held to just one goal and one assist in the game by the Cortland defense,
Brayden Black (East Islip) completed the scoring with 3:33 left in regulation to give Cortland the 20-7 victory.
