Cortland Splits With Oswego in SUNYAC Doubleheader

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland baseball team split a SUNYAC doubleheader against Oswego at Wallace Field on Tuesday, dropping the opener 10-5 before bouncing back for a 12-6 win in Game 2. With the split, the Red Dragons move to 21-8-1 overall and 13-1 in conference play.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Oswego, but was moved to Cortland due to weather and field conditions.

Oswego 10, Cortland 5

Oswego jumped out early and never trailed, using a pair of big innings to take control of the opener. The Lakers struck for four runs in the first inning, taking advantage of two hits, two walks, and a Cortland error. Brogan Olson delivered an RBI single in the frame, and Oswego added three unearned runs later in the inning on a two-out throwing error to build a 4-0 lead. The Lakers extended their advantage in the second, scoring three more runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Olson and an RBI single by Dylan Rosenberg, to make it 7-0.

Cortland answered in the third inning with three runs. Trey McGowan (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) worked a leadoff walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Carlo (North Bellmore/St. Anthony's). Jack McFerran (Selkirk/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) followed with a two-run double to left-center, bringing home Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) and Tristan Gatchalian (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) to cut the deficit to 7-3.
The Red Dragons added another run in the fourth when Lucas Granger (Horseheads) scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Elkins, making it 7-4.

However, Oswego responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI sacrifice bunt by Daniel Winchester and an RBI double from Olson to push the lead to 9-4. After several scoreless innings, Oswego added an insurance run in the seventh on a solo home run by Brendan Mair. Cortland closed out the scoring in the eighth when Nicholas Plue (Schenectady/Guilderland) hit a solo homer to left field.

McGowan finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Elkins went 2-for-5 with an RBI. McFerran drove in two runs, and Plue added his home run. Cortland showed patience at the plate with eight walks but stranded nine runners.
On the mound, Aaron Knuutila (Lockport) provided strong relief, allowing just one run and one hit over four and two thirds innings with three strikeouts.

Oswego was led by Olson, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Emil Sander scored three runs and reached base three times. Starter Ryan Mayer allowed three runs in three innings. Aiden Kerr earned the win after giving up just one run on two hits over four innings of relief.

Cortland 12, Oswego 6

Cortland responded in the nightcap with a complete offensive effort, finishing with 16 hits and breaking open a close game with a five-run sixth inning.

Oswego opened the scoring in the third inning on a two-run home run by Sander to take a 2-0 lead. The Red Dragons answered in the fifth with a three-run rally. Granger drew a walk and moved into scoring position before Joe Yovino (Levittown/Division Avenue) delivered an RBI single to get Cortland on the board. Plue followed with a run-scoring single, and McFerran brought home another run with a bases-loaded walk to give Cortland a 3-2 lead. The Lakers answered right back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs on a two-run double by Harry Uvena and an RBI single by Winchester to regain a 5-3 advantage.

Cortland responded with its biggest inning of the day in the sixth. McGowan was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Granger launched a two-run home run to left field to tie the score at 5-5. Elkins was then hit by a pitch, and Gatchalian followed with a walk to keep the rally going. Plue delivered an RBI single to give Cortland the lead, and JJ DeLawder (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt) added another run on a fielder's choice, with all runners safe due to an error. Danny Jackson (Lagrangeville/Arlington) capped the inning with a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 8-5.

The Red Dragons added to their lead in the seventh. Granger singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Elkins reached on a bunt single. Gatchalian then drove in a run with a single through the left side, and Plue followed with another RBI single to make it 10-5. Cortland pushed its lead to 11-6 in the eighth when Yovino delivered his second RBI single of the game, and DeLawder capped the scoring in the ninth with a solo home run to right field.

Jordan Goble started and allowed four hits in three scoreless innings. Cooper Klinger, the second of six Oswego relievers, took the loss after being charged with Cortland's first three runs in the sixth.
