NEW PALTZ, NY – The Cortland men's lacrosse team rolled to a 24-6 road victory at New Paltz in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improve to 10-5 (5-0 SUNYAC) with their sixth consecutive victory, while New Paltz drops to 3-10 (1-4 SUNYAC).
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) contributed seven points on four goals and three assists, while
Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) had two goals and two assists and
Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) scored three goals.
Finnegan Mitchell (Sloatsburg/Suffern) had two caused turnovers to lead the Red Dragons, while also adding an assist.
Charlie Falowski (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) stopped seven shots in goal for his 10th win of the season.
Blake Hayden and Finn Smith each scored a pair of goals for the Hawks, and Jacob Kenny made 17 saves in a losing effort for New Paltz.
Cortland held a 72-24 advantage in shot attempts, including a 44-17 edge in shots on goal. The Red Dragons were also 26-for-27 on clears, and won 27-of-34 faceoffs in the game.
Eli Volk (Alamo, CA/San Ramon Valley) opened the scoring for the Red Dragons just 38 seconds into the first quarter with his 22nd goal of the season. Midway through the quarter, Cortland added four goals in just over two minutes of game action - one each by Stoecker, Kavanagh, Swedlund, and Volk - to take a 5-0 advantage.
Each team scored once in the final six minutes of the quarter, with Cortland's goal coming from
James Violi (East Islip) and Smith scoring for New Paltz, as the Red Dragons held a 6-1 lead into the second period.
Cortland outscored New Paltz by a 7-2 margin in the second quarter to extend the lead to 13-3 at halftime. Among the goals for the Red Dragons were three tallies by Kavanagh, two from Swedlund, and one each by Stoecker and
Caden Morra (Farmingdale/Plainedge).
Five more Cortland players scored a goal in the third quarter in helping the Red Dragons add to their advantage and make it a 19-5 game after three periods.
Michael Restino (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) netted a pair of goals, while
Ethan Pope (New Hartford),
Sean Olvany (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy),
Colton Hornquist (Eden), and
Steven Baranoski (Floral Park/Floral Park Memorial) each had one goal.
After Nick Darcangelo scored the first goal of the fourth quarter for New Paltz to reduce the deficit to 19-6 with 11:06 left, Cortland closed the game with five consecutive goals, one each scored by
Nate Marinaro (Binghamton/Chenango Valley),
Jacob Miller (Binghamton/Blue Ridge),
James Devine (Haverstraw/North Rockland),
Michael Rickard (Paramus, NJ), and Baranoski.
Jack Lucidi (Orchard Park) entered the game as the goalie early in the fourth quarter for the Red Dragons, allowing just one goal and making four saves in the final period of action.
