Talon Elkins and Connor Durkin Chosen as SUNYAC Baseball Athlete and Pitcher of the Week

Cortland sophomores Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) and Connor Durkin (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) have been selected as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Baseball Athlete and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week ending April 19.

Elkins, who was honored for the second time this season, batted .611 (11-for-18) with three doubles, a walk, five RBI, nine runs scored and a .667 on-base percentage in a 3-1 week for the Red Dragons. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, three RBI and two runs scored in a 9-6 win at RPI, including a go-ahead two-run double in the top of the eighth inning. Elkins also went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in a 12-3 win over the Engineers to complete the series sweep. Earlier in the week, he finished 3-for-4 with a double, two hit-by-pitches and four runs scored in a 12-6 win over Oswego.

Through 31 games (29 started), Elkins leads the Red Dragons in batting average among qualified players with .441, and is tied for first in hits with 45.

Durkin earned a six-inning save in Cortland's 12-3 non-conference win at RPI on Saturday. Entering the game in the fourth inning after having pitched just one and two thirds innings all season, he allowed no runs on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks over six innings.

Cortland (23-8-1, 13-1 SUNYAC) will host Oswego this Tuesday at 3 p.m. before traveling to Oneonta this Friday and Saturday for a three-game SUNYAC series.
