Cortland Rolls to 21-4 Win at Potsdam

POTSDAM, NY – The Cortland men's lacrosse team scored the first eight goals of the game, and rolled to a 21-4 road win at Potsdam in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday afternoon. Cortland improves to 6-5 (2-0 SUNYAC), while Potsdam drops to 5-2 (0-2 SUNYAC).
 
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) finished with four goals and three assists for seven points, surpassing 150 points for his career. Kavanagh is the 33rd player in program history to reach 150 points for his career. Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) chipped in four goals and an assist, and James Violi (East Islip) added three assists for the Red Dragons.
 
Jack Skarren (Long Beach) had four caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Dino Bowen (Yorktown) added three caused turnovers and four ground balls for the Cortland defense. Charlie Falowski (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) made five saves and allowed just three goals over three quarters to earn the victory, while Jack Lucidi (Orchard Park) made three stops during the final quarter.
 
Billy Kozloski scored three of Potsdam's four goals, and Ryan Wassmer also tallied a goal for the Bears. Tommy Storrin finished with an assist, two caused turnovers, and four ground balls.
 
Cortland need just six seconds to open the scoring in the first quarter. Nicky Miltenberger (Ridge/Longwood) won the opening faceoff and collected the ground ball, drove to the cage, and fired a shot into the top left corner of the goal for his second goal of the year.
 
The Red Dragons followed with goals by Frank Neeson (Orchard Park) and Mason Carroll (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) to extend the lead to 3-0 with 12:25 remaining in the quarter.
 
Stoecker then tallied three consecutive goals, two assisted by Kavanagh and another assisted by Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ), before Kavanagh tallied two goals of his own in a row to make it 8-0 with 3:04 left in the frame. Potsdam scored the final goal of the period, but Cortland held an 8-1 edge after 15 minutes of action.
 
Cortland added three goals in the second period, one each by Stoecker, Kavanagh, and Drew Williamee (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy), and the Red Dragon defense did not allow a goal for the Bears in the second quarter, to lead 11-1 at halftime.
 
Cortland scored twice in the first two minutes of the third quarter, a goal each by Eli Volk (Alamo, CA/San Ramon Valley) and Swedlund, but Potsdam responded with back-to-back goals by Kozloski to make it 13-3 with 10:22 left in the period.
 
Volk, Colton Hornquist (Eden), and James Devine (Haverstraw/North Rockland) finished off the period with a goal apiece for a 16-3 advantage heading into the final quarter.
 
Kozloski netted his third goal of the game 29 seconds into the fourth quarter for the final Potsdam tally of the contest, and Cortland finished off the scoring with five more goals in the period. Ethan Pope (New Hartford) scored his second goal of the season off a feed from Shea Hegarty (Latham/Shaker), Hegarty's first collegiate point, with 13:11 remaining. Hornquist scored for the second time in the game off an assist from Finnegan Mitchell (Sloatsburg/Suffern), and Michael Restino (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) scored his third goal of the year for Cortland's 19th goal of the contest.
 
Devine tallied his second goal of the game with 7:35 remaining, and Williamee completed the scoring with 1:13 left with his second goal of the game, assisted by Nate Marinaro (Binghamton/Chenango Valley).
