NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -
Gianna Endieveri (Glens Falls) and
Kaitlyn Macumber (Deposit) combined on a one-hit shutout as second-seeded Cortland opened SUNYAC tournament play with a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Buffalo State.
Â
Cortland (23-15) will face either top-seeded host New Paltz or fifth-seeded Oneonta on Friday at 10 a.m. in a winner's bracket game. The tournament opened Thursday with Buffalo State (26-12) beating sixth-seeded Oswego and Oneonta defeating fourth-seeded Fredonia in single-elimination games. The Cortland-Buffalo State game started the four-team, double-elimination portion of the tournament.
Â
Endieveri improved to 10-7 on the season after allowing one hit and two walks and striking out three in five innings. She retired the first 11 batters she faced before issuing two-out walks to Mya Hurley and Izzy Pezdek in the fourth, and Lexi Quagliana broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single to right in the top of the fifth.
Â
Macumber entered to start the sixth and retired all six batters she faced, two by strikeout, for her second save of the season. Right fielder
Sam Pusloskie (Clarence) made a running catch in right center on a ball hit by Pezdek to lead off the seventh to help keep the Bengals in check.
Â
Cortland scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the second.
Kaeli McAnally (Islip) led off with a single and stole second, and she moved to third on a
Morgan Ellerbrock (Colonie) infield single.
Maggie Cummings (Holland Patent) bunted Ellerbrock to second, with McAnally having to hold at third on the play, and
Shannon Scotto (Putnam Valley/Lakeland) followed with a groundout to shortstop that drove in McAnally.
Â
Pezdek, after tossing a complete game to defeat Oswego in the morning, went the distance again for Buffalo State and allowed four hits and one walk in six innings. Cummings finished 1-for-1 with a sacrifice,
Laila Smith (Guilderland) went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, Ellerbrock was 1-for-2 and McAnally finished 1-for-3.
