Red Dragons Remain Unbeaten with 3-0 Win at Misericordia

DALLAS, PA. - The Cortland field hockey team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 3-0 non-league victory at Misericordia University.

Sofia Cannistraci (Guilderland) made three saves for her third shutout of the season. Jordan Nonnemacher stopped five shots for the host Cougars (0-3). Cortland outshot Misericordia, 12-3, and had a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners, including two that led to goals.

Cortland opened the scoring 6:52 into the game. The Red Dragons earned a penalty corner and had one shot blocked before Claire Flanagan (Greene) knocked home a loose ball in front of the cage for her first goal of the season.

The lead grew to 2-0 less than two minutes into the second quarter, also on a penalty corner situation, when Madison Oliver (Holland Patent) tallied her third goal of the year off a pass from Lillian Morse (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake). The assist was Morse's team-high third of the season.

The Red Dragons closed the scoring 8:57 into the third quarter on freshman Grace Esposito's (Carle Place) first collegiate goal. Esposito took a pass on the right side and evaded a defender before depositing a reverse-stick shot inside the right post. Cannistraci made two of her three saves in the final 10 minutes, including one with 37 seconds left, to preserve the shutout.

Cortland returns to Pennsylvania on Wednesday for a non-conference game at York College.
