ITHACA, NY –
Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) headed home the game-tying goal in the 76th minute, as the Cortland women's soccer team played to a 1-1 road tie with Ithaca on Tuesday evening at Carp Wood Field. Cortland is now 4-2-1, while Ithaca is 4-1-2.
Vuotto scored for the four time in seven games for the Red Dragons on her lone shot on target in the game.
Chloe Polito (Oceanside) collected her first collegiate point with an assist on the goal.
Olivia Rouse (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) made four saves in goal for Cortland.
Zara Nourie scored Ithaca's goal, with an assist from Jayne Bogle. Katrina Varnum also stopped four shots in goal for the Bombers.
Ithaca controlled possession for much of the early part of the game, forcing Rouse into an early save just four minutes into the contest on a shot by Lilyana Baldi.
The Bombers opened the scoring in the 16th minute off a corner kick, as Nourie headed a cross from Bogle into the top left corner of the net.
Cortland's first shot on target came in the 27th minute, a shot by
Dana Scruggs (Bethpage) that was collected by Varnum.
One of the best opportunities for the Red Dragons to tie the score in the first half came in the 41st minute. Cortland was awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard area, but
Haley Loscalzo (East Northport/Commack) sent a low shot slightly wide of the left post.
The Bombers maintained the 1-0 lead into halftime after a shot by
Samantha Ruffles (Danbury, CT) in the closing seconds of the period was saved by Varnum.
Ruffles nearly equalized in the 69th minute for Cortland, but her shot from the left side took a deflection and went off the left post after a long cross from the right side by
Piper Klammer (Mahopac).
After increased offensive pressure in the following minutes, Cortland finally got level in the 76th minute. The ball bounced around inside the penalty area and made its way to the edge of the box to Polito, who lifted a pass into the center of the box for a jumping header by Vuotto past Varnum for the goal.
The Bombers nearly regained the lead just two minutes later when Sophie White found herself in front of goal with the ball, but her shot flew over the top of the crossbar to keep the game tied.
Each team had one shot on target apiece in the final two minutes, but Rouse made a comfortable save on a rolling shot by Baldi and Varnum did well to punch out a shot by Polito with under a minute left, as the game ended in a tie.
