2010 NCAA DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIP – AUBURN (NY) REGIONAL at Falcon Park
Game 9: #3 SUNY Oneonta 5, #5 Keene State College 2
AUBURN, NY – Senior first baseman Dan Randall (SALEM, NY/Salem) singled to left centerfield, driving in senior centerfielder Carmine Caputo (MAHOPAC, NY/Mahopac) from second base with the eventual game winner, and drove in one of two runs in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly to help third-ranked SUNY Oneonta break a 2-2 deadlock through three innings en route to a 5-2 triumph over sixth-ranked Keene State College in the first of three elimination games on the third day of the NCAA Division III Championship Auburn (NY) Regional at Falcon Park.
The Red Dragons (30-12), who posted their third 30-win season in the history of the program, and first since back-to-back 30-win seasons (1995, 1996), will play the winner between Castleton State College and Farmingdale State College in the final game of the day at 7:45 pm. Keene State ends its season with a 27-17-1 record
Caputo was the top hitter for Oneonta, going 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Sophomore second baseman Kevin Knack(GHENT, NY/Ichabod Crane) finished 2-for-4, driving in the first of two Oneonta runs in the third and, scoring the team’s final run in the eighth. Five different players registered one hit, including Randall with three runs batted in, sophomore left fielder Michael Center (SCHENECTADY, NY/Schenectady) with an RBI, and freshman catcher Bryan Marotta (CLIFTON PARK, NY/Shenendehowa) scoring a run.
Senior starter Brett Meservey (CATSKILL, NY/Catskill) picked up the win (4-2), allowing only four hits, two runs (one earned) and three walks while striking out seven in seven and a third innings. Junior Anthony Bates (UTICA, NY/Proctor) garnered his fifth save of the season, tossing one and two-third innings with a hit and a strikeout.
Keene State scored the game’s opening runs in the top of the third as senior shortstop Jesse Cahill (CRANSTON, RI/Cranston East) singled through the left side to score junior third baseman Vinny Ganz (WATERBURY, CT/Holy Cross), who advanced to third on the hit and scored on an error as the left fielder bobbled the ball attempting the throw to the infield. Sophomore centerfielder Kyle Morrill (AUBURN, NH/Memorial followed Ganz to score on the same error.
Morrill was the lone player with multiple hit, going 2-for-3. Senior starter Jeff Raymond (ANSTON, CT/Rham) earned the loss (2-5), giving up three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in seven innings.
