CORTLAND, NY – Senior right fielder Amanda Paulus (Easton, PA) belted a three-run home run to left center field with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as second-seed Moravian College overcame a 5-0 second inning deficit on its way to an 8-5 triumph over fifth seeded College of Staten Island in the second game of the 2011 NCAA Division III Softball Regional Championship hosted by SUNY Cortland.
The Greyhounds (36-7) move on to face the winner of the day’s third game between Montclair State University and Piedmont College (GA) on Saturday, May 14 at 12:00 p.m. The Dolphins (26-12) will play King’s College (PA) in an elimination game later today at 4:00 p.m.
With the game tied 5-5 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Moravian put a runner on base on a throwing error before sophomore third baseman Shannen Mohr (Slatington, PA/Parkland) put down a bunt single down the first base line to advance the runner before Paulus’ game winner. Paulus finished 2-for-4, scoring twice, while Mohr (two runs scored) and senior second baseman Stephanie Falzarano (South Plainfield, NJ) (RBI) each batted 3-for-4 and sophomore first baseman Amanda Dizinno (Budd Lake, NJ/Mount Olive) went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Junior Jenna Carmon (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) picked up the win (13-4) with a complete-game six-hitter, with three of the five runs earned in facing 27 batters. Staten Island junior Danielle Ponsiglione (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) recorded the loss (13-7), giving up 13 hits, and eight runs (seven earned) while striking out two.
Staten Island took the early lead with five runs on five hits in the top of the second inning. After senior first baseman Joanna Tepedino (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) led off the inning with a home run to left field, the Dolphins loaded the bases on three singles in four at-bats before senior centerfielder Jennifer Volpe (Staten Island/Moore Catholic) singled down the right field line to drive in senior second baseman Raechel Strobel (Staten Island/Curtis) from third and junior leftfielder Michelle Ferraiuolo (Staten Island/Moore Catholic) from second.
Staten Island added a third run on the same play on an error in the outfield before sophomore rightfielder Kristi Dillon (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) drove in Volpe with the final run of the inning on a fielder’s choice sacrifice bunt.
Tepedino was the lone player with multiple hits for Staten Island, batting 2-for-3. Four players registered one hit apiece.
Moravian got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning as Falzarano drove in Dizinno from second base on a one-out single, then added four runs on five hits in the fourth to tie the game. Carmon and freshman catcher Cassie Ernst (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona) each drove in runs in succession in the inning while leftfielder Maura Agnew (Doylestown, PA/Lansdale Catholic) brought in a run on a sacrifice fly. Ernst advanced to third on the sac fly and scored on an error on the second baseman in an attempt to throw her out.
