CORTLAND, NY – King’s College produced six of its game-high 13 hits in the first three innings, scoring four runs over the stretch, en route to an 8-1 victory over the College of Staten Island in an elimination game of the 2011 NCAA Division III Softball Regional Championship hosted by SUNY Cortland.
The Lady Monarchs (19-12) remain alive in the double-elimination tournament and will play in the 2:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, May 14, facing a team to be determined based on the outcome of the opening two contests of the day. With their second loss, Staten Island concludes its season with a 26-13 record.
Sophomore leftfielder Kaitlin Siegfried (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) was one of five players to record multiple hits, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a run batted in. Sophomore designated player Brittny Taylor (Sierra Vista, AZ/Tombstone) and sophomore second baseman Kayla Rutkoski (Shickshinny, PA/Northwest Area) each batted 2-for-3, with Rutkoski driving in three runs, while freshman shortstop Jenn Harnischfeger (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Nanticoke Area) and senior third baseman Gretchen Tholen (Goshen, CT/Holy Cross) each went 2-for-4.
Sophomore pitcher Annie Erndl (Clarksburg, NJ/Allentown) improved to 8-6 on the season in posting the complete-game victory for the Lady Monarchs, facing 29 batters and allowing six hits and a walk while striking out three batters. Freshman Stephanie Solari (Old Bridge, NJ/St. John Vianney) pitched the opening two and a third innings for Staten Island, giving up five hits, four runs, and a walk while striking out two batters in getting the loss (5-3). Junior Danielle Ponsiglione (Staten Island/St. Joseph by the Sea) tossed the final four and two-third innings, yielding eight hits and four runs while striking out two.
Six different players recorded a hit for Staten Island, with Ponsiglione driving in the team’s lone run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning.
