CORTLAND, NY – Sophomore third baseman Shannon Mohr (Slatington, PA/Parkland) sparked a come-from-behind performance for second-seeded Moravian College, driving in runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings in outscoring fourth-seeded Piedmont College, 5-1, in the late innings en route to a 6-5 triumph in game two of the 2011 NCAA Division III Softball Regionals hosted by SUNY Cortland.
The second-seeded Greyhounds (37-7) will face top-seeded and host Cortland in a battle of tournament unbeatens in the final game of the day at 4:00 p.m. Piedmont (28-14) will take on King’s College in a 2:00 p.m. elimination game.
Mohr finished the day hitting 4-for-4 with four runs batted in. With Moravian trailing 4-1 after three innings, she hit a leadoff homer to left center in the top of the fourth, followed with an RBI single with two out in the fifth, and capped a three-run sixth inning with the eventual game-winner, a two-out single through the left side to score senior second baseman Stephanie Falzarano (South Plainfield, NJ).
Falzarano went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while freshman centerfielder Miranda Sergas (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), who kicked off the sixth inning with a two-run single to tie the score at 5-5, finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Sophomore shortstop Megan McClain (Bishop, GA/Oconee County) was the top hitter for Piedmont, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored. McClain led off the first and third innings with leadoff singles in contributing to the Lady Lions’ early lead. Senior leftfielder Raley White (Bogart, GA/Oconee County) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and senior designated player/pitcher B.J. Cofer (Woodstock, GA/Sequoyah) hit 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Junior Jenna Carmon (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) came in to pitch in relief after sophomore starter Alyssa Fegely (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) gave up two runs through two batters in the opening inning, holding Piedmont to five hits, three runs (two earned) and a walk. Freshman Brittney Head (Cumming, GA/Forsyth Central) garnered the loss for the Lady Lions, yielding nine hits, six runs (three earned), and three walks while striking out five in six and a third innings.
