Lenny Smith joined the Cortland coaching staff in January 2018 and is the team’s linebackers coach. He came to Cortland from Muhlenberg College, where he coached inside linebackers for two seasons. The Mules finished 9-2 and earned a Centennial-MAC Bowl Series berth in 2016 and went 8-3 and won an ECAC Bowl game in 2017.
Smith played four years at Muhlenberg, earned three varsity letters, and was a starting inside linebacker in his final two seasons. Smith was named to the 2015 All-Centennial Conference second team after recording a team-best 83 tackles for a unit that ranked in the top 15 in Division III in total defense and rushing defense. A team captain as a senior, Smith was voted “Player’s Player” by his teammates for leadership and loyalty. He finished his career with 147 total tackles, including 13½ for loss and 4½ sacks.
A native of River Edge, N.J., Smith graduated from Muhlenberg in 2016 with a degree in media and communications. He also wrestled one year for the Mules, placing third at heavyweight at the 2015 CC Championships. He is a 2012 alumnus of River Dell High School in Oradell, N.J., where he was an all-conference linebacker, a four-year starter in wrestling, and a third baseman on the baseball team.
