Matt Steenberg has served as Cortland’s running backs coach since 2006, in addition to three other stints on the Red Dragons’ coaching staff. He coached quarterbacks in 1996 and wide receivers from 1997-98. He also was the wide receivers and defensive back coach for the Red Dragons from 1984-85 and the quarterback coordinator from 1985-86.
In 1986, Steenberg became the head football coach at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse. He coached at CBA until 1989 before taking over head coaching duties at Fayetteville-Manlius High, where he remained until returning to Cortland.
Steenberg completed his bachelor’s degree in physical education at Ithaca College in 1977 and earned a master’s degree in physical education from Ithaca in 1978. A tight end for three seasons and a wide receiver one year, he played on Ithaca teams that advanced to the NCAA Division III championship game in both 1974 and 1975. He also played baseball for two seasons. While working on his master’s degree, he served as the Bombers’ defensive backs and wide receivers coach.
A native of Syracuse, Steenberg graduated from Nottingham High School in 1973. He currently resides in DeWitt, N.Y., and is a physical education teacher in the Fayetteville-Manlius School District. He and his wife, Lynn, have three children -- Chrysa, Ryan and Sara.
