Entering his fourth season as an assistant coach at SUNY Cortland in 2012-13, Marques Dexter has helped develop one of the top horizontal jumps groups at the conference, regional and national levels. A two-time nominee for the USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year, Dexter serves as an instructor for the physical education department, and an adjunct instructor in the sport management department.
Dexter holds a USA Track and Field Level II certification in jumps, sprints, hurdles and relays, as well as being a certified Level I instructor for USA Track and Field. He also serves as the recruiting coordinator for the men’s and women’s track and field teams and was a Central Region coach at the 2010 Empire State Games held in Buffalo.
In the 2010-11 season, Dexter coached a total of six NCAA qualifiers, 10 ECAC qualifiers, four ECAC scorers, three SUNYAC champions, and 11 SUNYAC scorers in the horizontal jumps. At the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Dexter had three athletes qualify and compete in the long jump. Of the trio, Tim Scheftic finished his freshman campaign as the top freshman long jumper at the championship meet and in the nation.
During his first year at Cortland, Dexter coached three NCAA qualifiers, nine ECAC qualifiers, three ECAC scorers and nine SUNYAC scorers in horizontal jumps. Among those were Dasheen Ellis, who capped of his freshman year as a finalist at the 2010 NCAA Division III indoor championships, ECAC champion, and runner up at both indoors and outdoors at the SUNYAC conference meet.
Prior to Cortland, Dexter was a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and field teams at The University of Georgia. He assisted in recruiting women's sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers and with the development of horizontal jumpers, sprinters and hurdlers. Also serving as a program coordinator, Dexter provided assistance with numerous administrative duties, such as recruiting coordination, office management, travel coordination and budgeting.
Dexter earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Sport Management from Robert Morris University and a master’s degree in Kinesiology with a specialization in Sport Management and Policy Analysis from The University of Georgia. While at Robert Morris, he competed in the long jump and triple jump for three seasons and was awarded the college’s Signature Leadership award. This award is given to the top 13 graduating students who excelled in academics, leadership, and service both to the college and community. Previously, Dexter attended Rider University for a year and was a horizontal jumper for the Broncs.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Dexter was a member of the 262nd graduating class of Central High School. There he competed in track and field, earning a PIAA indoor state meet medal in the triple jump, Philadelphia Public League Champion in the long jump, and earning All Public distinction by the time he graduated in 2003.
