Helen Shearer joined the SUNY Cortland cross country/track and field program as an assistant coach in the fall of 2026.
A native of Hampden, Maine, Shearer graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a Bachelor of Arts in French and was named the Outstanding Student in the Exercise Science Concentration of her Kinesiology program.
While at UMaine, Shearer competed for the cross country and track and field teams, helping the women’s cross country team to their first conference championship in program history in the fall of 2025. She also competed in the steeplechase at the NCAA DI East Regional Outdoor Track and Field Championships, setting the school record in the event. Prior to UMaine, Shearer competed at the United States Military Academy, where she also set the school record and was conference champion in the steeplechase.
Shearer earned her USATF Coaching Education Level 1 Certificate and has volunteer coaching experience as the head high school coach for Penobscot Christian School during the 2023 spring season. She also has coached multiple years for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes summer camp in her hometown of Hampden, Maine.
