Sonya Comins has been an athletic trainer at SUNY Cortland since 1998 and held the position of head athletic trainer at the school from 2004-18. Comins currently works with the volleyball and baseball programs, while teaching both graduate and undergraduate studies in the Kinesiology department. She serves as a preceptor for the students in the Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program at Cortland. She was previously the athletic trainer for the Cortland men’s lacrosse team from 1998-2007 and the Cortland football team from 2005-14.

A Chaumont native, Comins earned an Associates in Arts from Jefferson Community College in 1993, and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and minor in Athletic Training from SUNY Cortland in 1996 and a Master of Science in Education in Health Education from Cortland in 2000. She was a two-year member of the Red Dragons' women's basketball team and served as a team captain during her senior season.

Comins holds multiple certifications, including being a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer licensed in New York, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a CPR and AED instructor through the American Heart Association, and completed Graston Technique Module 1. She is also a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), Eastern Athletic Trainers Association (EATA), New York State Athletic Trainers Association (NYSATA), and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

 A current resident of Cortland, Comins enjoys spending time participating in numerous outdoor water hobbies, especially in her hometown area on Chaumont Bay and Lake Ontario.
