THE BREAKDOWN… Cortland tries for a third straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title, heading to Brockport for the SUNYAC Wrestling Championship on Saturday. The Red Dragons have claimed nine SUNYAC titles all-time, and each of the past two championships after the conference reinstated its sponsorship of men's wrestling in the 2023-24 season after a hiatus of more than 30 years following the 1990-91 season.

BACK TO LAST YEAR… Cortland finished with a team score of 141 points to tie for first place in the conference at the SUNYAC Championship last season, sharing the team title with Oneonta. Brockport finished third with 134 points, followed by Oswego in fourth with 120 points. RIT (107.5 points), Ithaca (104 points), St. John Fisher (63.5 points), and Utica (24 points) rounded out the scoring from the other competing teams at the championship meet.

Cortland's Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) was named the championship's Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the individual title at 149 pounds. Centrone was 5-0 with a pin and three technical falls at the meet to claim his SUNYAC title.

Shane Walczyk (Eden) finished second at 141 pounds for the Red Dragons with a 3-1 record and two pins to garner second team All-SUNYAC honors.

In addition to Centrone and Walczyk, four other returning Red Dragons had top-four finishes in their weight class. Dom Vinci (Spencerport) placed third at 141 pounds with a 5-1 record, Cade Sands (Addison/Addison Central) was fourth at 125 pounds, and Robby Cunningham (Miller Place) was fourth at 184 pounds.

THE CORTLAND CAPSULE… The Red Dragons posted six top-five finishes at the Ned McGinley Invitational to open the season, highlighted by a first-place finish at 157 pounds by Colton Havens (Canisteo/Canisteo-Greenwood) and a second-place finish at 133 pounds by Rocco Futia (Wallkill).

The following weekend featured three top-six finishes for Cortland at the Ithaca Invitational, including a fifth-place finish at 165 pounds by Justin Klein (Miller Place), and sixth-place finishes each by Tristan Robinson-July (Ossining) at 165 pounds and Joseph Visciano (Smithtown/Smithtown East) at 174 pounds.

Cortland then took a select group of wrestlers to the Luther Open in Decorah, Iowa, with Robby Cunningham placing sixth in the 184-pound Elite division in the event that featured a range of competitors from Division I to junior college.

In late November, Cortland finished second as a team out of 19 schools at the New York State Collegiate Championships Open. Three Red Dragons won individual weight classes, including Colton Havens, Luke Chernaski (Merrick/Kellenberg Memorial), and Nicholas Rose (Lindenhurst), while 11 others placed in the top six of their brackets.

Rocco Futia claimed the individual title at 141 pounds as Cortland wrapped up its fall schedule at the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic, before returning to action in 2026 at the Williams Open, where Culley Bellino (Canastota) won the 141-pound weight class.

In their last action prior to the conference championship meet, the Red Dragons placed 10th with a 2-3 team record at the Lycoming Budd Whitehill National Duals. Ethan Gallo (Minisink/Minisink Valley) finished 5-0 with two technical falls and three major decisions in his first collegiate action during the weekend.

CLOSING IN ON THE RECORD BOOKS… Culley Bellino enters the weekend with 49 pins in his career, second in program history. The career record for pins is currently held by Jared Myhrberg, who achieved 51 pins from 2009-13. Bellino also has 52 falls (pins and technical falls) for his career, one shy of matching Myhrberg's 53 career falls. Meanwhile, Angelo Centrone has 47 falls for his career (10 pins and a program-record 37 technical falls).

STOP THE MATCH!… Cortland has 135 victories by pin as a team so far this season, with Culley Bellino leading the way individually with 19 pins. The Red Dragons also have 39 wins by technical fall, with Colton Havens accounting for a team-high nine tech falls.

CONTRIBUTING FROM DAY ONE… The Red Dragons have received a significant boost from a trio of freshmen. Colton Havens has posted a 23-6 record at 157 pounds, also leading the team in victories. Nicholas Rose has an 8-7 record with six pins at 197 pounds, and Luke Chernaski is 9-9 with six pins at 165 pounds.

MULTI-SPORT ADDITION… Cortland's Ethan Gallo has posted a 5-0 record since joining the team this season, including two technical falls and three major decisions. Gallo is an all-region and two-time All-Empire 8 honoree as a running back for the Red Dragon football team, and has also competed for two seasons on Cortland's baseball team.

IN THE RANKINGS… The Red Dragons have five wrestlers in the regional rankings by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Colton Havens is fifth in the region at 157 pounds. Meanwhile, Robby Cunningham, Joseph Visciano, Dom Vinci and Christian Lievano (East Setauket/Ward Melville) are all ranked eighth in the region, at 184 pounds, 174 pounds, 141 pounds, and 125 pounds, respectively.

SUNYAC WEEKLY WINNERS… Cortland has claimed SUNYAC weekly awards three times this season. Culley Bellino was named the conference's wrestler of the week one time, while Colton Havens and Nicholas Rose were each selected as the rookie of the week once.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION… Last year's co-champion Oneonta returns the two-time defending conference champion at 184 pounds in Jack Ryan, while the conference runner-up at 197 pounds in Carson LiCastri looks to claim his first title after finishing second twice. Trevor Cortright joined Oneonta this season after winning the 133-pound title while wrestling for Utica last year. Two other runners-up from last season also return for Oneonta in Avery Leonard (149 pounds) and Mason Rappold (165 pounds). Oneonta also has six wrestlers in the regional rankings in their weight class, while Ryan is fifth and Leonard is 14th in the national rankings.

Brockport returns a pair of individual conference champions from last year. Gavin McLauglin won the individual title at 165 pounds, while Kiam Coleman is back after claiming the 174-pound title last season. The Golden Eagles also picked up an impact transfer in Tyler Rossini, who claimed SUNYAC titles at 157 pounds in each of the last two seasons while at Oswego. Six wrestlers for Brockport are currently in the regional rankings, while Rossini is 12th in the national rankings.

Oswego is led by three wrestlers in the regional rankings. Freshman Juan Roque is ranked sixth at 125 pounds, while Michael Santora (141 pounds) and Avery Canzano (184 pounds) are both seventh in the region.

RIT's Josh Harkless will look to defend his conference title from last season in the 285-pound weight class. Last season's runner-up at 174 pounds in Tyler Balent also hopes to earn his first conference title for the Tigers. RIT features seven wrestlers who are ranked in the region in their weight class, while Harkless is third in the national rankings.

Ithaca has four returning wrestlers who have claimed all-conference honors over the past two seasons. Tomah Gummow was the conference champion at 125 pounds last year, while Konrad Parker claimed the SUNYAC title at 165 pounds in 2023-24. Xavier Pommells will look to improve on two runner-up finishes at 184 pounds, while Isaias Torres hopes to find the top of the podium after finishing second at 133 pounds in 2023-24. The Bombers have seven wrestlers in the regional rankings, including four in the national rankings. Parker is third nationally at 174 pounds, Torres is 11th at 141 pounds, Gummow is 13th at 125 pounds, and Jay McDonnell is 14th at 133 pounds.

St. John Fisher also has seven wrestlers in the regional rankings, and Braydon Vandenberg looks to earn a second conference title after winning the 197-pound weight class in 2023-24. The Cardinals also return Derek Bernardino, who placed second at 133 pounds last season.

Utica will look to claim an individual title for the second season in a row, while the Pioneers do not currently have any wrestlers in the regional rankings.
