#11 Red Dragons Sweep Host Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The nationally 11th-ranked Cortland women's volleyball team improved to 25-2 on the season with a three-set non-league victory over host SUNY Oswego. The Red Dragons won all three sets by the identical score of 25-15.

Senior Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) led the Red Dragons with eight kills and a .615 attack percentage. She had no attack errors in 13 total attempts and also finished with seven digs. Junior Ava Hintz (East Aurora) also recorded eight kills and led the team with six service aces and two blocks.

Freshman Kayla Pollock (Massapequa) totaled seven kills and six digs and senior Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) added 22 assists and nine digs.

Oswego (10-14) was led by Sabrina Sutton and Stephanie Bailey with five kills each. Chelsea Crump added four kills and two aces and Stephany Olsheski had 10 assists.

Cortland used an early 4-0 run in the first set to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 5-3 lead. The Red Dragons were up 11-9 before going on an 8-3 run that featured two kills each by Pollock and senior Natalie Zacpal (Islip) to take a 19-12 advantage.

The second set was tied eight times early on, the last at 9-9. Cortland then scored eight of the next nine points, including two Hintz aces and two Coyle kills, to take a 17-10 advantage.

The Red Dragons pulled away from a 6-5 lead in the third set with a 7-1 run to go up 13-6. The Lakers hung tough and were within 18-13 after a Krump kill, but two Hintz kills ignited a 6-0 Cortland streak that helped put the set and match away.

Cortland will compete in the final SUNYAC East pool play Friday and Saturday at New Paltz. The Red Dragons will face Oneonta and Potsdam Friday at 3 and 5 p.m. and New Paltz and Plattsburgh Saturday at 10 a.m. and noon. Cortland is currently 4-0 in the division. The top three teams from the East will join the West's top three teams at the SUNYAC Tournament Nov. 2-4 at the West champion.
