ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Cortland field hockey team broke open a close game at intermission with two early second-half goals and went on to defeat Nazareth College, 4-1, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons leveled their record at 4-4 with the win, while the Golden Flyers dropped to 1-9.
Four different players scored a goal for Cortland, led by senior
Katie Barbagallo (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) with a goal and an assist. Senior
Erin Carrino (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), junior
Karly Vdoviak (Johnstown) and sophomore Abbey Wentlent (Greene) each tallied a goal, and junior
Holly Flanigan (Amherst/Williamsville North) added an assist. Sophomore goalie
Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) made eight saves to even her record at 3-3 on the season.
Kailee O'Hara scored an unassisted goal for Nazareth, and goalkeeper Shannon Winney stopped 11 shots.
Carrino scored what proved to be the winning goal 11 minutes, 55 seconds into the game with an unassisted effort. Vdoviak made it 2-0 at 20:41 before O'Hara cut the lead to 2-1 less than five minutes later. The Red Dragons took control of the game early in the second half with goals just 47 seconds apart. Wentlent scored off an assist from Barbagallo on a penalty corner at 39:50, and Flanigan set up Barbagallo's goal at 40:37.
Cortland returns to action on Friday, hosting SUNYAC foe Oswego in the 13th annual Dragon Sword game at 4 p.m.
