Woodward Reaches 100 Career Points in 3-0 Win vs. St. Lawrence

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Sara Woodward (Ancram/Pine Plains) became just the 10th Cortland field hockey player to reach 100 career points with her goal in the second half as the Red Dragons defeated St. Lawrence, 3-0, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the Stadium White field. Cortland improved to 8-6 with the win, while the Saints dropped to 2-13.

Seniors Katie Barbagallo (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) and Erin Carrino (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) also scored goals for the Red Dragons with juniors Karly Vdoviak (Johnstown) and Erin Smith (Greene) collecting assists. Sophomore Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) started in the cage and did not face a shot on goal in 64 minutes, four seconds before giving way to senior Emily von Schondorf (Webster/Webster Thomas), who also did not see a shot in the final 5:56.

Junior goalie Nicole Matos (Greenwich, CT) turned aside 17 shots for St. Lawrence. Senior Emily Viani (Concord, NH) made two first-half defensive saves.

Barbagallo gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at 10:50 when she poked in a loose ball in front after the Saints failed to clear away a pass into the circle. Carrino made it a 2-0 game at 17:21. Vdoviak sent a cross from the right side to Carrino in front who one-timed a shot past Matos for her seventh goal of the season.

The Saints' best chance to score came 4:30 into the second half. Shortly after a penalty corner, senior Courtney Cartier (Hudson Falls) struck a one-time shot from six yards out that barely slid outside of the left post. Ten minutes later, Woodward scored her milestone goal. Smith carried into the circle and dropped a pass back. Woodward stepped into the shot from just inside the line on the left side and scored through traffic.

The Red Dragons wrap up their regular season with a game at The College of New Jersey on Sunday before competing in the SUNYAC Tournament at New Paltz next weekend.
