Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) recorded 17 kills and eight digs and junior
Ava Hintz (East Aurora) added 13 kills and three digs as nationally 12th-ranked Cortland swept a scrappy host University of Scranton squad, 25-21, 25-19, 26-24, in a non-league match at the Long Center.
Senior
Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) finished with 38 assists and eight digs for the Red Dragons, who improved to 21-2 on the season. Freshman
Kim Givelechian (Rosyln Heights/Herricks) had eight kills and 14 digs, senior
Natalie Zacpal (Islip) chipped in with five kills and two blocks and junior
Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) led the team with 16 digs.
Scranton (14-10) was led by Julia Crilly's double-double of 14 kills and 13 digs. Jenell McFadden also recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs and Marissa Every finished with 14 digs.
Scranton led 20-17 in the first set before Cortland finished with an 8-1 run. The Royals then fought back from late deficits in the second and third sets, but the Red Dragons held on each time.
Cortland will play two matches Saturday at Hamilton College. The Red Dragons will face Middlebury College at 2 p.m. and the host Continentals at 4 p.m.
