#12 Red Dragons Earn Wins vs. Middlebury and Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. – The nationally 12th-ranked Cortland women's volleyball team earned two victories in a tri-match at Hamilton College. The Red Dragons, now 23-2, defeated Middlebury in three sets, 25-19, 25-21, 35-33, and overcame a first-set loss to beat Hamilton in four sets, 16-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-11.

Senior Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) and junior Ava Hintz (East Aurora) led Cortland versus Middlebury with 13 kills each. Coyle also had nine digs, while Hintz finished with three blocks. Junior Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) recorded 10 kills and just one error in 23 attempts for a .391 attack percentage. She also registered 12 digs.

Senior Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) totaled 39 assists and 10 digs. Junior Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) led the team with 19 digs and freshman Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) had five kills and nine digs. Givelechian and senior Natalie Zacpal (Islip) shared the team lead with four blocks apiece.

Middlebury dropped to 12-4 with the loss. The contest was a rematch of last year's NCAA Div. III New York Regional final, which Cortland won in four sets.

Cortland then defeated the host Continentals behind Barrett's 14 kills and no errors in 31 attempts for a .452 attack percentage. Coyle and Hintz added nine kills apiece and Guercio rang up 37 assists, 11 digs and two aces.

Silk had a team-best 13 digs and Coyle totaled 12 digs along with a team-high four aces. Freshman Sydney Hayward (Trumansburg) chipped in with five kills and nine digs, while Hintz led the squad with three blocks.

Cortland will host Ithaca on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m.
