#9 Red Dragons Remain Unbeaten After Finishing 4-0 at Union Invitational

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The nationally ninth-ranked Cortland women's volleyball team finished with a 4-0 record at the Union College Invitational after defeating the host Dutchwomen in four sets and Utica College in three sets.

The Red Dragons, now 13-0, were one of teams to finish unbeaten at the eight-team tournament along with Oneonta. Union finished 3-1, Skidmore and Sage Colleges each went 2-2, Hartwick was 1-3, and Utica and Brockport were each 0-4.

Cortland pulled away in the third and fourth sets for a 25-23, 20-25, 25-19, 25-18 victory over Union. Junior Ava Hintz (East Aurora) led the Red Dragons with a career-best 20 kills. Seniors Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) and Natalie Zacpal (Islip) added 15 kills each. Coyle also had 20 digs and three aces, while Zacpal recorded a career-high 10 blocks.

Freshman Kayla Pollock (Massapequa) totaled nine kills and six blocks and senior Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) distributed 53 assists and added 13 digs. Junior Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) posted a team-high 24 digs and freshman Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) finished with 20 digs.

Coyle led Cortland with nine kills and had six digs in a 25-14, 25-11, 25-12 win over Utica. Pollock put down seven kills, sophomore Mary Kelly (Guilderland) had six kills and four blocks and freshman Sydney Hayward (Trumansburg) finished with six kills and two blocks. Guercio recorded 29 assists, five digs and two blocks and Silk had 12 digs.

Hintz and Zacpal were named to the all-tournament team.

Cortland will host SUNYAC East pool play next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21-22. The Red Dragons will play Friday versus New Paltz at 3 p.m. and Oneonta at 5 p.m., then Saturday against Potsdam at 10 a.m. and Plattsburgh at 2 p.m.
