YORK, PA. – Cortland won two matches, including a 3-0 win in the fifth-place match versus the host school, to finish 3-1 at the York (Pa.) College Spartan Invitational. The Red Dragons are now 20-2 on the season.
Cortland finished pool play Saturday morning with a 25-10, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22 victory over FDU-Florham. Stevenson, Grove City and Cortland each finished 3-1 in the pool, and based on a tiebreaker Stevenson won the pool, Grove City was second and Cortland was third. Stevenson won the tournament title with a five-set win over Eastern (Pa.). Grove City lost to Rowan in the third-place match, and Cortland swept York in the fifth-place match, 25-14, 25-15, 25-15.
In the FDU-Florham match, senior
Natalie Zacpal (Islip) finished with 10 kills and three blocks and senior
Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) had eight kills and six digs. Senior
Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) recorded 34 assists, six digs and three kills. Junior
Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) and sophomore
Kelly Knauerhase (Cortland) contributed six kills apiece.
Against York, Guercio rang up 32 assists and nine digs and Coyle led the team with 12 kills and 16 digs. Freshman
Kim Givelechian (Rosyln Heights/Herricks), junior
Ava Hintz (East Aurora) and Zacpal totaled nine kills each. Hintz also had four blocks, Zacpal finished with three blocks and two aces, and Givelechian registered nine digs.
Cortland travels to the University of Scranton on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for a non-league match.
