#13 Cortland Finishes 4-0 to Win Nazareth Golden Flyer Invitational

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Cortland, ranked 13th nationally in Div. III, improved to 8-0 on the season and won its second tournament title in as many weeks with victories over Nazareth and Clarkson at the Nazareth Golden Flyer Invitational. Cortland finished 4-0 during the two-day tournament, including four-set wins Friday versus Fredonia and 19th-ranked Mt. Union.

Senior Ashley Coyle (Mt. Hope/Minisink Valley) was named tournament MVP, while junior Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Coyle recorded seven kills and 12 digs in a 25-18, 25-17, 25-17 sweep over Nazareth and 10 kills, 18 digs and three blocks in a 13-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20 win over Clarkson. Barrett totaled 11 kills and two digs versus Nazareth and 13 kills and 10 digs against Clarkson.

Senior setter Kristen Guercio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) finished with a combined 72 assists in seven sets. She had 33 assists and eight digs in the opener and 39 assists and five digs in the Clarkson match. Junior Ava Hintz (East Aurora) put down a career-high 18 kills and added four blocks against Clarkson after opening the day with nine kills, a .571 attack percentage, four digs and three blocks against Nazareth.

Freshman Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) added seven kills and eight digs against Nazareth and six kills and nine digs versus Clarkson. Senior Natalie Zacpal (Islip) finished with eight kills against Nazareth and five kills and five blocks in the Clarkson match, while junior Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) helped the defense with 18 digs against Clarkson and eight digs against Nazareth.

Cortland will host Brockport in a dual match on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m.
