POTSDAM, N.Y. – Plattsburgh rallied after losing the first set to defeat Cortland in four sets during the first day of SUNYAC women's volleyball play in Potsdam. Cortland won the opening set, 25-23, before the Cardinals won the next three sets, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-23.
The Cardinals and the Red Dragons are now both 2-2 in league play and are part of a three-way tie for fourth place with Fredonia. New Paltz, Buffalo State and Potsdam are tied for first with 4-0 league marks. There are five matches remaining in the conference schedule – for Cortland, it will be matches Saturday versus Geneseo and Fredonia, as well as three matches to complete league play in Buffalo Oct. 25-26. The top six teams qualify for the SUNYAC postseason tournament.
After winning the first set, Cortland led 21-17 in the second set before Plattsburgh came back. Cortland rallied in the fourth set after being down to make things interesting before falling by two points.
Senior
Ava Hintz (East Aurora) led Cortland (11-13) with 14 kills and a .370 attack percentage. Junior
Kelly Knauerhase (Cortland) added 10 kills and freshman
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) added eight kills, eight digs and three blocks.
Freshman
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) totaled 40 assists and six digs and senior
Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) led the team with 18 digs and four aces. Senior
Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) finished with seven kills, nine digs and three blocks and junior
Mary Kelly (Guilderland) had seven kills and a team-high five blocks.
Rosi Cummings paced Plattsburgh (9-12) with 19 kills and 14 digs and Maggie Schrantz added 13 kills and four blocks. Meghan Clifford and Kristen Marchisatto recorded 24 and 21 assists, respectively. The Cardinals defeated Cortland for just the second time in 56 matches and the first time since 2002.
