BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The nationally 15th-ranked Cortland field hockey team opened up a 3-0 lead at the half and went on to defeat The College of Brockport, 5-1, in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons won their fifth straight game, improving to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The Golden Eagles fell to 4-5 and 0-3.
Senior
Karly Vdoviak (Johnstown) paced the Cortland offense with a pair of goals. Junior
Emily Woods (Williamsville/Williamsville North) and freshmen Gabrielle Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) and
Shelby Underwood (Marathon) each contributed a goal. Senior
Erin Smith (Greene), junior Abbey Wentlent (Greene) and sophomore
Jillian Vogl (Cazenovia) chipped in with one assist apiece. Junior goalie
Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) made four saves.
Madison Buckley scored for Brockport with Emily Corpin assisting on the goal. Gina Stephan recorded two defensive saves. Goalie Lindsay Farrell turned aside 16 shots as Cortland out shot the Golden Eagles, 33-8, in the game.
Vdoviak gave Cortland an early 2-0 lead, scoring on a rebound at four minutes, 17 seconds and off Smith's assist on a penalty corner at 12:33. Woods made it a 3-0 game heading into the half after she intercepted a failed clearing pass and scored unassisted at 26:43.
Buckley put Brockport on the scoreboard 9:35 into the second half with a goal off a penalty corner. The Red Dragons, however, sealed the win when Stein and Underwood found the back of the cage on penalty-corner goals at 48:31 and 64:59, respectively.
