CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's soccer team scored a goal in each half and defeated Geneseo, 2-0, in SUNYAC action Friday afternoon at Jets Field. The Red Dragons improved to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the conference with the win, while the Knights fell to 6-7-2 and 3-3.

Juniors Darren McCormack (Dublin, Ireland/Fingal) and Andres Padilla (Brentwood) scored goals for Cortland. Seniors Bryan Merlos (Harrison) and Joe Buffolino (Commack) each contributed an assist.

Junior goalie Tim Beauvais (Hilton) made seven saves for the Red Dragons in recording his fifth shutout of the season. Sophomore goalie Logan Calvey (Vestal) turned aside two shots for the Knights.

Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute on McCormack's team-high sixth goal of the season. Merlos slid a diagonal ball to the right of the box where McCormack ran onto the pass and chipped a shot over Calvey into the left side of the goal. The Knights created two dangerous chances before the half with crosses from each side traveling all the way across the goal mouth and through the box with no touches.

Geneseo pressured early in the second half but could not break through with the tying goal. Late in the game with the Knights pushing up, Padilla scored an insurance goal on a diving header at the left post on a long cross from the right by Buffolino in the 87th minute.

The Knights continued to push forward and had a goal waved off for offsides with under two and a half minutes left to play and Beauvais made a diving save on sophomore Jaisen Clark's (Vestal) one-timer on a loose ball with two minutes remaining. One last chance by the Knights, a header from senior Mat Rough (Warwick), was denied by Beauvais at the right post in the closing seconds to keep the shutout intact.
