Red Dragons Clinch Berth in SUNYAC Playoffs with 1-1 Tie vs. Brockport

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland and College of Brockport men's soccer teams played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie Saturday afternoon at a windy Jets Field in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons clinched a berth in the conference playoffs with the point earned and their record now stands at 8-6-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the SUNYAC. The Golden Eagles are 8-1-5 and 3-1-3.

Sophomore Robbie Reiser (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) scored a second-half goal for Cortland with junior Chris McBride (Northport) assisting on the score. Junior goalie Tim Beauvais (Hilton) registered six saves.

Sophomore Peter DiLorenzo (Hicksville) notched his team-high ninth goal of the season for Brockport. Sophomore goalie Casey Sullivan (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) recorded the assist on the goal and turned aside three shots.

DiLorenzo gave the Golden Eagles an early 1-0 lead with his goal on the 12th minute. After a Cortland foul in its offensive third, Sullivan lofted a long free kick into the box that DiLorenzo flicked with a header over Beauvais.

The goal stood until the 77th minute when Cortland tied the game. McBride possessed the ball on the left side of the box and slipped a pass to Reiser who spun and hit a low 16-yard shot through a screen that eluded a diving Sullivan for his second goal of the season. The Red Dragons had an excellent chance to earn the win but Sullivan denied junior Darren McCormack's (Dublin, Ireland/Fingal) penalty kick with six minutes, 29 seconds remaining after a Cortland player was pulled down in the box.

In the second overtime, each team had a quality chance to grab the win. With just under three minutes to play, Cortland freshman Jack Sumski (Lindenhurst) dribbled through two defenders into the box and struck an open 15-yard shot that sailed over the crossbar. Twenty seconds later, Brockport senior Chris O'Gorman (Wading River/Shoreham-Wading River) was alone deep in the box but Beauvais made a diving save on his shot attempt to preserve the tie.

The Golden Eagles won the penalty-kick tiebreaker, 5-4, and would earn a higher seed in the conference playoffs should the two teams tie in the standings.
