CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior
Erin Smith (Greene) scored with seven minutes, 31 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift the nationally 16th-ranked Cortland field hockey team to a 3-2 win versus Oneonta Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.
Sophomore
Jillian Vogl (Cazenovia) and freshman Gabrielle Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) also scored for the host Red Dragons (11-2, 6-0 SUNYAC). Junior Abbey Wentlent (Greene) collected an assist. Freshman goalie
Mairead Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) registered eight saves in the second start of her career.
Junior Andrea Day (Greene) tallied both of the visiting Red Dragons' (10-6, 2-3) goals with sophomore Sara Rattigan (Stormville/Carmel) chipping in with an assist. Junior Tess Tracy (Liverpool) made 14 saves, while senior Stephanie Fiske (Marathon) recorded two defensive saves and junior Sierra Earle (Baldwinsville) had one.
Vogl gave Cortland a 1-0 lead 28:03 into the game with a rebound goal. Conklin tied the game at 45:09 when she converted a cross from Rattigan. The visiting Red Dragons grabbed a 2-1 lead at 62:16 on Conklin's rebound goal. Hourihan made a diving save and a second shot hit the post before Conklin cleaned up in front. With Cortland pressing for the tying goal in the closing seconds, Cortland was awarded a penalty corner. The ball went out to Stein at the top of the circle, who blasted a shot past Tracy with no time on the clock to send the game to overtime.
In the first 15-minute extra session, Cortland earned five penalty corners but could not convert. The host Red Dragons controlled much of the play in the second overtime and eventually broke through at the midway point. Smith controlled the ball at the top of the circle, pulled it out, pushed it back in and blasted a long shot that found the cage to give Cortland the 3-2 victory.
Cortland claimed the top seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament and will host the four-team playoff on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9.
