CANTON, N.Y. – Freshman Gabrielle Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) scored six minutes, 18 seconds into overtime to lift the nationally 16th-ranked Cortland field hockey team to a 3-2 victory at St. Lawrence Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons won their ninth consecutive game and improved to 12-2 on the season, while the Saints dropped to 6-10.
Stein led the Cortland offense with two goals. Cortland's other tally in the game was credited as an "own goal." Seniors
Karly Vdoviak (Johnstown) and
Erin Smith (Greene) each recorded an assist. Freshman goalie
Mairead Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) registered eight saves.
Senior Kate Higgins (Middlebury, VT/Kimball Union Academy) and junior Erica French (Fort Edward/Hudson Falls) scored goals for St. Lawrence. Senior goalie Nicole Matos (Greenwich, CT) made 19 saves.
Stein gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead at 16:46 with her 18th goal of the season, deflecting in a pass from the right side by Vdoviak. Cortland took a 2-0 lead into the half when a Saints defender put the ball into her own cage at 34:18 after Smith delivered a shot into the circle.
St. Lawrence started its comeback when Higgins scored from the left side on a penalty corner at 50:19. French then knotted the game up at 2-2 with just 1:03 remaining in regulation, flipping a rebound of her own shot over Hourihan.
In the first overtime period, Stein scored the game-winner off an assist from Smith to give Cortland its fourth straight win by a 3-2 margin, the last two in overtime.
