Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) had eight kills and seniors
Ava Hintz (East Aurora) and
Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) finished with seven kills apiece as Cortland swept Fredonia, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18, in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament quarterfinals at SUNY New Paltz.
The Red Dragons (15-21), seeded sixth in the six-team tournament, will face second seed Buffalo State in the semifinals Saturday at 3 p.m. at New Paltz. Cortland has advanced to at least the SUNYAC tournament semifinals in all 30 years that the championship originated in 1984.
Hintz also led Cortland with seven blocks. Freshman
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) recorded 28 assists and four blocks and junior
Kelly Knauerhase (Cortland) added six kills. Freshman
Victoria Grix (Pearl River) paced the team with 19 digs, while senior
Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) and freshmen
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) and
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) each tallied three service aces.
Paulina Rein led Fredonia (25-9) with seven kills and 13 digs. Jess DeChristopher and Sara Madison had six kills each, Hannah Manning served four aces and Kelly Edinger finishes with 27 assists.
Cortland finished the match with a .189 attack percentage, including a .292 mark in the third set, while Fredonia hit at only a .036 clip. The Red Dragons avenged a 3-0 loss to the Blue Devils during the regular season.
The opening set was tied 16-16 before Cortland took the lead for good with a 5-1 run. Hintz, Barrett and Knauerhase had kills, McGuirk served an ace and Hintz and Barrett combined on a block during that stretch. With the score 23-21, the Red Dragons finished the set on kills by
Mary Kelly (Guilderland) and Barrett.
Trailing 20-18 in the second set, Cortland tied it at 20-20 on a Fredonia error and a block by Knauerhase and Hintz. Fredonia took the lead at 22-21 on a service error, but the Red Dragons tied it on an error and took the lead on a kill by Kelly. Fredonia knotted the set at 23-23 on Kaitlin Orcutt's kill, but Cortland scored the final two points on a Barrett kill and a block by Roberts and Kelly.
The Red Dragons used an early 5-0 run in the third set to turn a 6-6 tie into an 11-6 lead. Czeczotka had two aces during that run. Fredonia, however, came back and tied the set at 15-15 after a 4-0 run. Knauerhase and Barrett answered with kills, followed by a Fredonia error, a block by Barrett and Hintz, and another Blue Devil error, to put Cortland up 20-15. The Red Dragons' led 21-18 before scoring the match's final four points.
