Cortland Loses to Brockport, 4-1, on Eighth-Inning Rally

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Brockport scored three times in the top of the eighth to break a 1-1 tie and the Golden Eagles defeated nationally top-ranked Cortland, 4-1, in a SUNYAC contest.

The Golden Eagles improved to 11-9 overall and 2-6 in the league. Cortland is 17-6 and 6-2. The teams will play a doubleheader at Cortland Saturday at noon.

Brockport's winning rally started with a Mike Gianni leadoff single and a pair of hit batters – Jake Coleman and Kyle Tracy – that loaded the bases with no outs. Pete Wilson drew a walk to force in a run and Nick Bunce hit a two-run single through the left side.

Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side) singled with one out and Tim Panetta (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) singled to the pitcher. Anthony Iacomini (South Salem/John Jay-Cross River) hit an RBI double to center to score Rosing, but the Red Dragons left runners stranded on second and third after a lineout and groundout.

Brockport knotted the game in the fifth when Dan Hurlimann reached on an infield single, stole second, went to third on a two-out groundout and scored on Gianni's RBI single up the middle.

Rob Stankiewicz earned the win in relief of starter Travis Renwick. Stankiewicz allowed only two hits in three scoreless innings. Renwick gave up seven hits and one walk, struck out three and allowed one run in six innings.

Cortland starter Kyle Barkley (Penn Yan) suffered his first loss in five decisions this spring. He allowed nine hits and three runs in seven innings. He did not walk anyone and struck out six. Barkley allowed the first two baserunners, who both scored, in the eighth.

Gianni went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Zack Lander finished 2-for-3 with a walk for Brockport. Bunce was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Wilson went 2-for-4 with a walk and RBI.

For Cortland, Iacomini was 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI and Rosing finished 2-for-4. Zack Graczyk (Carmel) ended 2-for-5.
